Hamilton East Public Library - Noblesville
Hamilton East Public Library enlisted the services of KBA from 2015-2018 for a three phase project transforming their libraries to better serve the needs of their communities. Initially, building assessments were conducted, followed by an exploration of space layouts and initial budgeting. The next phase involved assisting with the evaluation and selection of an architect to oversee the necessary changes to the buildings. Finally, KBA led all interior design for the renovation of both locations. Also included in the engagement was the evaluation and acquisition of two 9-bin Automated Material Handling Systems.
At the Noblesville, IN location the Children’s Area was dramatically expanded and improved. To create additional space, the staff areas were consolidated and the teen space was moved to the main floor of the library. The lower level now houses the children’s collection and programming spaces, children's staff offices, and limited space for processing and cataloging. A colorful mural mimics the facades of downtown Noblesville and there is a large imaginative play area, interactive wall for toddlers, tables with building toys and a reading and lounging space. The collection was transferred to face-out shelving for easier self-serve browsing. A separate space was set aside for pre-teens and older children that includes a quiet study area with computers and mobile tables for individual study and tutoring. An interactive Motion Magix gaming system adds an element of fun. A Mamova pod was added to accommodate nursing mothers. The reconfiguration nearly doubled the space and provided an additional entrance directly into the children’s library.
Space and building updates were also completed on the main floor of the library. Notably, the entrance area became more welcoming with the addition of a browsable popular library and updated circulation desk. Efforts were made to convert some of the shelving and collection space to allow for more collaboration and workspaces. Flexibility was maintained through the use of mobile tables and configurable seating.
Project completed under Kimberly Bolan and Associates and led by Rob Cullin and Kimberly Bolan Cullin.
