Serving the City of Sun Prairie and surrounding communities, the Sun Prairie Public Library (SPPL) stands as a testament to the transformative power of community-centered planning and innovative programming. Under the adept leadership of Library Director Svetha Hetzler, SPPL has not only embraced change but has also become a vibrant hub for lifelong learning and community engagement.

The Power of Strategic Planning

Svetha Hetzler highlights the importance of a well-thought-out strategic plan, explaining, "It's really easy to put more on our plates and go after shiny new objects. A 12-month work plan based on our strategic plan helps us prioritize and focus." This disciplined approach ensures that SPPL's initiatives are purposeful and aligned with its overarching goals.

By adhering to this structured plan, Hetzler and her management team remain accountable, tracking progress meticulously. Monthly director reports document achievements, and progress is presented to SPPL board, fostering transparency and accountability.

Addressing Challenges Head-On

The strategic planning process at Sun Prairie Public Library began with a keen awareness of existing gaps, further substantiated by data. One significant challenge identified was the lack of dedicated marketing and communication staff. In response, a smaller cohort was established to focus on marketing efforts. Despite not having a fully funded position, this team has worked diligently to streamline and enhance SPPL's outreach and promotional activities.

Outreach efforts were another area needing attention. Recognizing the importance of community engagement, SPPL has increased its outreach initiatives. This commitment to outreach has been instrumental in bridging gaps and fostering stronger community ties.

Embracing Innovation and Outreach

A notable outcome of the strategic planning process was the evaluation of new software platforms to enhance SPPL's outreach. Hetzler explains, "Our current practice and methods were not reaching many community members, so we demoed two software products that we learned about at conferences and from colleagues: Library Aware and Patron Point." The newly established marketing and communications team took the lead in this evaluation, and the team advised that these platforms meet different needs. The library now uses Library Aware and may ultimately invest in both platforms to address different needs. While these tools do not replace the need for a professional marketing person, they represent a significant step forward in optimizing SPPL's outreach capabilities.

One of the most impactful initiatives born from the strategic plan was the Artist in Residence program. Hetzler shares, "We wanted to have more programs that would be a taste of our future makerspace." The library’s first Artist in Residence was a Sun Prairie resident and UW Madison art lecturer.  They hosted workshops, open studio hours, and interactive activities, such as 10-minute sketches and paired portraits. These sessions fostered community involvement and showcased SPPL as a space for creative expression.

Celebrating Diversity Through Affinity Programs

Intentional programming to serve underserved communities has been a cornerstone of SPPL's efforts. Working with consultants and community members, SPPL has expanded its Latiné programs. Hetzler notes, "Instead of offering programs solely designed by librarians, these programs were planned and designed with community members." This collaborative approach led to successful events like Latiné nights, which featured resource fairs, bilingual storytimes, health presentations, and cultural celebrations.

The success of these programs has inspired similar initiatives for other populations, including the Hmong community. Collaborations with the Hmong Institute and the DEI advisory committee have ensured that programming is culturally relevant and community-driven.

Building for the Future: The Library Expansion Project

A significant milestone for the Sun Prairie Public Library is its upcoming addition and remodel project. After six years of planning, the project is in its final stages, with design and construction documents complete and funding secured. The expansion will feature innovative, sustainable elements, such as a makerspace, a sensory room, hybrid technology, an outdoor amphitheater, solar and geothermal energy, EV charging stations, a microgrid, and a battery energy backup system. These additions align with the city's push for socio-economic and environmental sustainability and aim to provide long-term energy savings.

Initiatives That Make a Difference

Reflecting on SPPL's achievements, Hetzler expresses pride in SPPL's increased presence at community-wide events, such as Juneteenth and Pride celebrations. Additionally, SPPL's focus on sustainability is evident in its programming and the involvement of the city’s sustainability coordinator in the building project.

Partnerships with other community organizations have also flourished, reinforcing SPPL's mission to be a central, accessible hub for lifelong learning and literacy for all. This mission, Hetzler emphasizes, remains simple yet profound, guiding all of SPPL's endeavors.

Looking Ahead

The strategic initiatives undertaken by the Sun Prairie Public Library have not only addressed immediate challenges but have also positioned SPPL for a future of greater impact. By collaborating with community partners and embracing innovative solutions, SPPL continues to evolve as a dynamic and inclusive space for all residents.

According to Hetzler, "Staying on message as to why the public library even exists" is crucial. The Sun Prairie Public Library exemplifies this by continually adapting to meet the needs of its community while staying true to its core mission of fostering lifelong learning and literacy.

As SPPL embarks on its next chapter, the commitment to strategic planning, community engagement, and innovative programming ensures that it will remain a cherished and vital resource for the Sun Prairie community for years to come.
